The Yahweh Disclaimer

Nadine edits crossword puzzles for a living and uses the Encyclopedia Mythica as a reference.

If you browse through the articles on the site, you can read brief descriptions of various mythical creatures/people. The site just tells it like it is.

Only one entry, though, gets its own disclaimer:

Yahweh

This article is not intended as a religious discussion. It relates only to the mythological and historical aspects of the use and development of the name of God. No attempt will be made to discuss the values and strengths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the three great religions that hold God as their core. Such an attempt will be well above the scope of one article; the interested reader is encouraged to pursue the wealth of material available to everyone.

As Nadine writes in an email: “Poor Encyclopedia Mythica! I’m sure they had a million e-mails contending the inclusion of Yahweh in a myth reference.”

(On a side note, Jesus Christ and Allah get no such disclaimer.)

Sure, but it’s not the purpose of an Encyclopedia of myth to say what is and isn’t, but apparently some people think it should be, which leads to silly disclaimers like this. It’s just funny that none of the other entries have to have disclaimers.

It sounds like the title of a Dan Brown book.

Myths, of course, can be true.

You believe what C. S. Lewis says? Myth became fact? If so, how do myths become true? Usually it’s the other way around, if there is any fact at all and then the fact gets so buried in myth we can’t find any fact anymore.

I’ve never read any Lewis, sorry. Pretty much any intro text books on mythology will tell you the same, though.
