Joss Whedon to Receive Cultural Humanism Award from Harvard

Salman Rushdie won the first “Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism” from Harvard University.

Lead singer of Bad Religion Greg Graffin won the second one last year.

This year, the award will be given to Joss Whedon, creator of Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

… The ceremony will take place on Friday April 10 at 8pm, in The Memorial Church in Harvard Yard. Preceding the presentation of the award, Mr. Whedon will give a short speech about his life and work as a Humanist. The award ceremony will be followed by a Q&A session with Mr. Whedon, as well as a signing opportunity in the church.

Tickets will be on sale soon.

If anyone wants to buy me a ticket… and maybe pay for my flight from Chicago to Cambridge… I’ll *totally* join you and buy you a cookie.

As long as it’s not Wil Wheaton.

Cool. :-) I’m ashamed to admit that I wasn’t aware that Joss was a humanist, but it definitely is consistent with what I know of him. Good on him; wish I could be there.

Hey, hot damn, something I can go to! For once, living in Boston means something more than accents, sports, and aggression!

    If you do go…post photos!

I didn’t even know anything about Firefly until Serenity hit the big screen.

My wife and kids all became fans at the same time along with me.

As a family, we were able to enjoy the series via the DVD of the entire run to include commentary by Joss, Nathan and cast.

Man, that is a great group and an awesome universe!

Bad Religion FTW!! Nice to see the guys (well, Greg at least) getting some recognition for once.

Joss is the MAN. Fran Kranz (from The Dollhouse) has a character on this new website, Showbizzle.com. I’ve been following it along with watching him Fox. He’s very good on there too. I’m kinda hooked – I even joined the contest, lol. Maybe they’ll fly me out to LA.

This conflicts with American Atheists National Convention. All of us secularists need to sit down and work out a schedule!

(Firefly is a fantastic show, btw)
