I don't think Dole's mistake is all that good for us. What other politicians have learned is: don't make an outlandish accusation that is tenuous at best. Kay Hagan did not clearly support the Goddless Americans PAC, take lots of their money, or have any commitments towards their agenda. And Hagan took great pains to make that clear. People were outraged by this because it was seen as false. If Hagan had actually met with just the Goddless Americans in an exclusive setting and taken their money, Dole's ad campaign probably would have worked.

I’m pleased to see that Dole’s anti-atheist bigotry has helped contribute to her lower poll numbers.

What makes you think that Dole's anti-atheist bigotry has hurt her? I see no evidence of this at all, particularly since Hagan has said nothing that to argue with Dole anti-atheist bigorty, and in fact, has implicitly agreed with it.

Dole is in trouble for falsely attacking her opponent as an atheist, not for attacking atheists. In fact, Hagan's supporters here have gone to great lengths to argue (probably correctly) that it would have been poltically unwise for Hagan to defend atheists, and to say that atheists are decent Americans who deserve a voice in the political arena, just like anyone else. I hardly see how this is a victory against anti-atheist bigotry. To say that it is, is like saying that Obama's high poll numbers are a victory against anti-Muslim bigotry, because he's managed to convince enough voters that he's really not a treacherous Muslim.

It’ll send a message to others considering the same smear tactic when Dole gets booted out of the Senate tomorrow.

Yes. I believe that message is "Before you accuse your opponent of being a dirty, filthy, atheist, make sure you can prove it. People don't like to see such vile slurs thrown about without evidence."

Utter disgust. Why oh why can't these people run on their platform and what positions they support and how they are going to help the people they represent? This bent focus on someone else needs to stop... it's not even campaigning... it's the lowest form of hate.
