What’s disheartening is how many people truly believe you need belief in a god and/or a “holy book” to teach you stealing is wrong, and to keep you from doing it.

Actually, the fundie would phrase it this way: “It’s in all of our natures to steal, and the penalty for having that nature is eternal damnation, and the only way out is to accept Jesus as your personal savior.”

Of course, fundies never consider that if we have a fallen nature, whose fault is that? If we fell from grace right out of the starting gate, there had to be something wrong with the blueprint. But this never occurs to them.

And, yes, I agree that they are in the majority.

It makes me wonder how dumb people must be not to realise that stealing is bad. Do you need to explain why it is bad? If you do, why not give the reasons and some of the many consequences of theft rather than claim a divine mandate?

It seems to me that people don’t want a loving god to care for and forgive them. They want a policeman in everyone’s brain.

I have the sinking feeling that the person in the left panel actually represents a significant number of people, maybe even a slim majority in this country.

The right-hand person could be an Atheist, a Buddhist, a moderate Christian, or just about anybody except a fundie. The left-hand person could only be a fundie, though.
