I have to agree with Pseudonym, that this is an US-centric list (mind you we both say US-centric, not America-centric but that's another matter).

The decision was eventually reversed by the Supreme Court — they said atheist Michael Newdow did not have legal standing to bring the case on behalf of his daughter because of a custody dispute.

This is just weaselly, contemptible tripe. In other words, exactly what I have come to expect from Thomas, Scalia, Alito, and Roberts. I can't see why Kennedy ever vacillates to their side on rulings - it's become increasingly obvious that Scalia, Alito, and Roberts owe their allegiances more to the Republican Reich than to the people of the United States. Thomas is a sack of crap, too, but at least he wasn't installed by the fascist theocrats.

Somehow I missed the story of Ms. O'Hair's family's disappearance and discovery. What a sad thing. I think she was a courageous and tough woman. She was so reviled and hated. She had guts--I wish we had more of her type around today.

How did you decide on these as the Top 5 Most Important Days?

For me, they signify the moments that had the biggest impact on atheists in America.

Pseudonym:
It’s a good thing that Murray O’Hair was finally dumped as the public face of atheism.

Read the article. She wasn't voted out by a committee.

Beautiful post dude! I actually had no clue that O'hair was murdered! The media at the time painted a completely different story of that case. I might actually buy that Harris book. I've always wanted to, but I'm not much of a reader beyond articles. Sam Harris has a wonderful way with his words, and he's so good at keeping his cool (unlike Dawkins).

Thanks for posting this!

OK, I'll bite. Consider this contribution in the same the spirit as that of the original post.

1. The entire list is US-centric.

2. It's a good thing that Murray O’Hair was finally dumped as the public face of atheism. But thanks to the "New Atheists", her odd brand of irrationality lives on. (And, BTW, if Sam Harris is the person I have to thank for Christopher Hitchens, then he has a lot of explaining to do.)

3. 9/11 is the universal example of everyone with an agenda. Some atheists say it proves how evil religion can be, many liberals say it proves how evil poverty and superpower meddling can be, neocons say it's proof that Iraq needed to be invaded, and Hemant already mentioned Pat Robertson's take on it... you get the picture. The popular Atheist interpretation of 9/11 is no more right than anyone else's. This is probably the most sane take on the whole thing.

I think that the most important day for atheists in the past few years happened a little over a decade ago: Carl Sagan's death. He was really the last of the great "statesman-like" atheists that everyone could genuinely admire.
