The Catholic League’s William Donohue is for some reason the guy the mainstream media goes to when the Catholic Church is in the news.
Everything offends him, innocuous or not.
Chris at Cynical-C Blog has a list of the people and organizations that have been called “bigots” or “bigoted” by Donohue.
You may want to grab a drink. This could take a while.

I think parts 2 and 3 of the list are coming soon
A few are warranted, some are only mild accusations, but it’s obvious the Catholic League enjoys throwing that word around.

Maybe I just missed it as I scrolled down, but I didn’t see The Simpsons on that list, and I’m pretty sure Donohue has turned his guns on them at least once before.
I can’t help but notice that Penn Jillette and “Penn & Teller” were named in two separate press releases. Does that mean that Penn is twice the bigot? The same goes for David E. Kelley and the show “Boston Public” that he wrote.
Also, Al Roker? Seriously?
They had to list Penn separate from Penn& Teller?
How do I get my name on that list? I’ve got to be at least as offensive to Catholics as Ally McBeal and Kwanzaa.
Holy Cow! It is sad that Donahue is the ‘go-to’ spokesperson for the Catholic Church.
P.S. did you see Kathy Griffin’s hilarious response to Bill Donahue?
You can see it here on youtube.
(The Catholic League bit starts at 6:45)
It would appear that we have a new drinking game on our hands.
I liked his bizarre appearance on the Colbert Report the other night.

I’ll have to update my post to make clear that I only posted those that Donohue used the term “bigot” in the press release. There were plenty of other organizations, shows and people that Donohue claimed to be anti-catholic, or catholic bashers but just didn’t go that extra length and declare them to be bigots.
And their press releases only go back to 1998 which means that the list is far, far from complete.
(BTW, I love your blog Hemant)
It might be easier to maintain a list of people William Donohue has not called a bigot. He sure likes to judge. Very Jesus-like.
good plan, jeff
Jeff: “It might be easier to maintain a list of people William Donohue has not called a bigot.”
You stole the words right out of my mouth.
Why is Ted Turner on the list twice? Is he twice as big of a bigot as the entirity of Bob Jones Univeristy?
I sprained my finger from all that scrolling.
The list has neither Friendly Atheist nor commentators from Friendly Atheist included. Everyone, we’re doing something wrong. Quick, say something “bigoted” about the Catholic Church! I’ll start.
The Catholic Church thinks women are second-class citizens and church members and will never allow them to become priests, and hides behind this sexist position by pretending that they respect Mary a lot, when all she did (in their version of history) was never lose her hymen.
Oh snap, no I didn’t.
Thanks for publishing the list. I found it most enlightening.
“You keep using that word. I do not think it mean what you think it means.”
I think I’m going to make it a personal goal to get on William Donohue’s list.
Given this, it’s hard to tell who hates more people, him or the Westboro Church of Fred Phelps from Kansas.
I noticed the University of Minnesota on there and clicked the link. Article said that because the U of M was going to put on a play about the Pope and something, they are bigotted. I don’t believe the President of the U of M bowed to his whims to cancel it.
Ye gads, it seems if you don’t do things his way and believe things his exact way, you’re a bigot. Or, that’s just what it seems thus far.
James, Westboro doesn’t hate people they hate gays… I believe at Westboro the two are mutually exclusive.
I love how he even includes Catholic Democrats and Catholics for a free choice on there. Translation: even if you consider yourself catholic, if you don’t agree with Bill Donahue, you’re a bigot! It seems anyone who disagrees with him and dares to actually say it is a bigot! I think there should be just one list with one name on it: William Donahue. He’s one of the worst biggots I’ve ever seen.
Sounds like someone is excersizing bigotry against Catholics.
I’m suprised the Catholic League hasn’t accused more entities of bigotry. I want to know how they define it, so as to confirm or deny my disappointment that I’m not on it.
