Mississippi Atheists

Posted in Friendly Atheist at 7:00 am by Hemant Mehta

You exist! At least a handful of you. And judging by the (at least) ten — ten! — atheist groups in the state, that’s a pretty big handful.

vjack of Atheist Revolution is one of the people starting the new Mississippi Atheists blog:

Living as an atheist in Mississippi can be a lonely experience. Evangelical Christianity is pervasive here, and one can expect to encounter frequent proselytizing, anti-atheist bigotry, and even discrimination based on one’s lack of belief in ancient superstition. Many atheist Mississippians conceal their feelings toward religion to prevent social ostracization or avoid punitive consequences.

The purpose of this new blog is to provide resources and support to Mississippi atheists. I am convinced that there are far more of us out there than we realize, and forming connections, even those over the web, can normalize one’s experience and reduce feelings of isolation. If you are an atheist living in Mississippi, you are certainly not alone.

If you live in or near the state, check it out.

You might even meet other in-state/local atheists in the process!

Thanks much for the mention, Hemant. It has been quite awhile since I started with a new blog project, and I’d forgotten how much work it is to get the word out. I’ve been hitting the various forums and working on lining up co-authors. I really appreciate your post here as it probably reaches more people than all my other efforts combined! Hmmmm…now if I could only get to PZ I’d be set.

Wow, an atheist lives in Mississippi? It reminds me of “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn”! Good luck to you - let us know how it’s going once in a while. I’m curious to see what response you get!

Really? I know of an atheist meet up group in Olive Branch and Tupelo, but those are both a long drive from my area of Mississippi. I’ve been looking for something more local.

And you’re not the only one, James. That is a big part of why I’m trying to get this thing together.
