Bill Maher on Larry King Live
Last night, Bill Maher appeared on Larry King Live. In the clip below, he discusses religion, the Catholic League’s Bill Donohue, and his upcoming movie Religulous:
Whether you like him or not, you gotta admit he’s blunt, honest, and passionate.

I love Bill Maher. And, I agree with him 90% of the time. That said, I also agree with Christopher Hitchens 90% of the time, and I dislike him. A lot.

Bill Maher sounds so great… until you ask him about Holistic Medicine… He’s got a lot of gall calling himself a rationalist when he denies scientific evidence for modern medicine and praises Holistic Medicine which is just a scam that feeds on ignorance. If special Asian herbs and needles actually cured people, they would be included in modern medicine.
In his defense, I think he hates the pharmaceutical industry more that he believes in Holistic Medicine. But Holisitc Medicine is not different that Tarot and Palm-readers or Psychics and so forth. So that is worse than a corrupt industry… in my opinion.

Well, there is the placebo effect. You can’t deny that. The mind has a significant effect on healing. Of course, you are right that claims of holistic medicine are often overstated.

Regardless of Maher’s views on medicine (which are obviously irrational), he did an exceptional job of defending the rationalist stance in this clip, IMO.

Wow. So many rationalists out there, and so many of them seem to have their Achilles heels. Why is that?

I can’t wait for this movie to come out! Thanks so much for posting. I don’t agree with Bill Maher on everything, either, but overall, I have much more to like about him than not.

I like Maher and agree with a lot of what he says, but whenever he talks about medicine he dives right into woo-ville.

[…] Maher, on Larry King Live yesterday, referred to the Bible as “a collection of Jewish fairytales” that should be kept fully […]

Maher also won the 1999 pigasus award for endorsing a series of psychics. Would be nice to hear if he still believes in haunted houses, or if he considers himself to be religulous…

I have not heard what Maher says about psychics or alternative medicine.
But let it be known, acupuncture and herbs ARE part of modern medicine.
Modern medicine, though it has found many treatments, their usual approach to curing you is based on the belief that you have too many organs, or you don’t have enough drugs in your system.
I like Maher and agree with him far more than I disagree with him.
Like Robin, I admire Christopher Hitchens and his intellect, but I find him morally contemptible.

The life expectancy in this country is higher than it has ever been in this nation’s history. The reason is mainly two things: sanitation and modern medicine. To all those who believe in holistic medicine I want to call your bluff. The next time you or someone you know has a real disease (cancer, heart attack, stroke) I urge you to use only herbs and acupuncture to heal them.
