To me this is tender rather than amusing. It brought tears to my eyes because it expresses exactly how I feel about my wonderful wife. Happily I still get to enjoy her company after loving her for 37 years. My “sole” mate.

I argue that his love is made more potent because he doesn’t need an infinite amount of time to love her, and he realizes this, and it makes his love stronger in the here and now since he realizes that he might not have forever to love. It brings more immediacy to their relationship.

I agree with Mike that the word “soul” also makes sense defined in a psychological way.

The way I would say it is that I don’t believe in souls, but I do believe in the part of the soul-concept that makes sense psychologically. That part is consistent with materialism (although personally I wouldn’t label it “soul” since that may confuse some people).

Mike, I think that is exactly what makes them humourous- not rolling on floor funny, but chuckle funny. It sort of kills them to analyze them too much though.

Personally I wouldn’t use the word “humorous” at all. Heartwarming maybe… but since their real point is to make an argument about atheism vs. religion, I don’t think it’s inappropriate to analyze the argument they are making.

I wouldn’t argue either. What does the length of time have to do with the potency of the love? Whether you believe in an afterlife or not, you can still say “I will love you for as long as I exist.” The sentiment is the same either way.

The first panel can still be true if you think of “souls” as a psychological concept rather than a metaphysical one, as I do. After all, the word “psyche” is simply the Greek word for “soul”.
