Posted by Hemant Mehta in Before he passed away in 2006, Philip Paulson had fought for 17 years to have the cross on Mount Soledad removed.
It’s still there, but the city of San Diego has lost its case in court and must pay Paulson’s lawyer, James McElroy, a settlement of around $750,000.
It’s not the $1,400,000 that McElroy wanted, and the land is now in the hands of the federal government, but it’s a moral victory, I suppose…
I’m curious where the award money is going. McElroy worked pro bono, from what I’m reading.

It would really be justice if he could buy the land.
It could go towards an endowment for a college scholarship, maybe. For a student who shows a strong commitment to preserving the separation of church and state. But that’s just my idea.
