Or take Richard Virenque, who for a long time insisted that he hadn’t used drugs, after his entire team had been kicked out of the Tour de France and his team mates had admitted that everyone on the team was using them.

As you say, they seem to hope that if they stick to their fantasy long enough, eventually the truth will go away.

What was Marion Jones thinking, denying that she used steroids for years even after her former coach gave 60 Minute an interview saying he saw her injecting right next to him?

People get so caught up in denial and unreality that they start to believe their own lies. They can’t find a way to back out, so they just keep dissembling and hope somehow the issue goes away.

Eventually, the truth catches up with most of them, but not always. It must be a terrible way to live.

jules, don’t be too harsh in judging the family and friends of an out-of-control person. If your insight about Craig being in a repeating cycle is correct, then it could be that the public is finally learning about it because the family/friends enabling part of the system is no longer protecting him from the consequences. They may not have that much influence on him to begin with, but if they are no longer trying to inhibit him or cover for him that’s actually good in the long run.

For the family of an alcoholic one the hardest parts of recovery is letting the problem become public, getting past the shame that has driven them to protect and conceal his disease. Once it gets out, some outsiders may indict the family but they’re really doing what must be done to help him.

He’s thinking that if he just continues to perpetuate the vicious cycle of sin/redemption, as appears to have worked for him so far in his life, then he will get his sorry ass into heaven when he dies. The more anti gay rights he acts in Congress, the more he gets to be “a naughty, naughty boy.” This cycle is a giant circle, just like the cycle of violence that traps people into certain patterns of action that they repeat and repeat because that is how they have always acted, until they have an intervention and learn how to grow up and act like a real human being.
The thing I don’t get is how his family and closest friends allow him to get away with this hypocracy. They must be living in a religious sub-reality in which they are either completely oblivious, increadibly gullible, or in an even bigger state of denial about the man than he himself is. Shame on them.

He’s thinking that a convincing lie is as good as the truth. He’s thinking that saying it aint so strongly enough makes it not so. He’s thinking that “clearing his name” is better than clearing the air. He’s thinking like a politician.
