I think it's likely that Rush doesn't really believe the crap he says. He's manipulating the dumbasses out in the country, just like the Republican Party's leaders in Congress and the Executive Branch. They have philosophical positions that they know they can't put to a popular vote, so they gain power by diverting attention to other issues that play upon the ignorance and prejudice of the dumbasses (e.g., God, guns, gays, patriotism, atheism, etc.).

Rush might have believed this stuff early on in his life, but weak-willed, self-absorbed, and narcissistic people like him get gradually corrupted by success, fame, wealth, drugs, sex, etc. One day they find themselves saying the same old words, but not really believing them. But, by this time they're too invested in the empire they've built, and they love the lifestyle too much to admit they no longer believe. This is how the Elmer Gantrys come about.

I don't worry about Rush; I worry about what it's going to take for the blind and belligerent third of the voters to realize they've been duped. What will be lost before that day comes, if it comes.

But what did Bozo the Clown say?

That would be more interesting!

(The audience Rush is entertaining seems far less mature than Bozo's).

It seems there's only one religion in this country that seems to supercede all others; it is "Economics" and "Money" is the god. Not that other issues can't take on a life of there own like a religion but nothing compares to the love of money around the world. At least money is a tangible tool and resource; right!

<blockquote>"Faith is believing what you know ain't true."
--Mark Twain</blockquote>

A much better quote, and one to the point in Rush's case. He really seems to be convicted internally about this mumbo jumbo, but I wonder about the sanity of someone who can make a statement like that and take themselves seriously.

Maybe he's not totally whacko --- maybe he's just manipulative. Or maybe he dreams of world conquest. I guess that'd still make him crazy.

When people like Rush make odd claims about global warming or other complex scientific phenomena they know nothing about, I have a stock reply:

"And which ivy league university did you acquire your Ph.D. in climatology from?"

'Cause I can guarantee there's at least one person who will disagree, and be able to answer "Princeton" to that question.

[[ replace major as needed =) ]]

Rush said:
<blockquote>You just can’t. You might run around and say, “I don’t want to destroy God’s creation.” God’s laughing at you.You can’t!</blockquote>

Stan is certainly right about the "God [verb]" warning flag. So Rush knows what God thinks is funny? Why don't we put some of our nuclear waste in Rush's backyard? Since he is so sure we can't hurt the natural environment, he shouldn't mind. God will just help him adapt to all plutonium in his lawn.

Maybe some people's environmental activism is like a religion for them, but that is stretching the whole meaning of "religion" to it's breaking point. People get passionate about all kinds of interests and hobbies. So what? However everyone should make their best effort to promote intellectual honesty on both sides of the political spectrum.

The point Rush clearly misunderstands is that blind faith is not a good thing, whether you have blind faith in some religion or even global warming. Someone needs to remind him that the 9/11 hijackers were also also faithful people who "believed in something larger than themselves." Obviously that idiotic Chesterton quote failed in their case.

He's encouraging people to believe that beliefs based on scientific evidence are "religious" and arbitrary, and that's what really pisses me off. But it's not a departure from his usual tactic of saying his view of reality is the true one when all the evidence says otherwise. The really disturbing part is that so many people would rather accept his viewpoint as the truth instead of forming their opinions rationally.

(And yes, people still listen to this guy. I'm related to quite a few of his listeners.)

<blockquote>He just says what his audience wants to hear!</blockquote>

This is what scares/upsets me about Rush. I don't care that he is a dimwit who spreads lie, misconceptions, and hate. The fact that he has millions of listeners that agree with what he says simply because he says it, that is what keeps me up at night.

Rush can say all he wants....the fact of the matter is we are a wasteful, polluting smog creating society and until each one of us steps up to the plate and takes responsibility for our actions and we do are part than nothing changes.

These guys can talk all they want....and the point about global warming becoming your GOD....is just a way to stir the pot...

If we wait for the government to do something about this, it will be too late...

The key is to NOT make this a political issue, everytime something becomes a political issue in our country, NOTHING gets done...Demicans, Repulicrats..they are all the same...There is NO leadership in our country right now and most likely that trend is going to continue.

You gotta stand for something or you will fall for anything is true...Standing up and protecting our air, land, and earth is a good thing, until we get into a political debate or a religious debate, then while we waste all this time trying to get something done...

Global warming or climate change is definitely and issue and that is not debatable anymore...so why bother. Now is the time to share with friends, family, neighbors and local communities about how to start wasting our resources...and take charge on a personal level...

When dealing with Mr. Limbaugh and his ilk, I have found the following to be a uselful rule: Anytime you see a sentence beginning with the word 'God' followed by a verb--any verb--all sensors should go to full alert, because the speaker is about to say something revealing about him/herself without the faintest notion that they're doing so.
