Friendly Atheist Contest #2: Atheist-Christian Radio Show Name
Last week, I asked this question:
What absurd statement will Sherri “Is the world flat? I don’t know” Shepherd make next?
You all responded in droves.
Here are the Top 10 answers (with submitters)!
10| “In defense of my statement on the earth…well, damnit, why SHOULD I be expected to know science? I’m a woman. Science is left up to the men of this world. And everything else that requires thought.” (Kate)
9| “Does Human papillomavirus come from Spain?” (Brian)
8| “Men are taller than women because having one less rib leaves more calcium for the leg bones.” (Vincent)
7| “I hear all this talk about bacteria, and microbes and what ever. All I know is that Jesus heals, and if you’re sick, you need to do some more praying!” (William)
6| “Look, I found Jesus. I get to keep him. Finders keepers. That’s in the Bible. Look it up.” (Brendan)
5| “Birth control? I don’t know. Only God knows how many babies you’ll have.” (Mriana)
4| “Miss Teen South Carolina told us our education is suffering because US Americans don’t have maps. And what shape are maps? Flat! Or don’t you want to build up our future for our children?” (Gadren)
3| “I think all religions are basically true, as long as they are Christ-centered.” (Evtujo)
2| “I don’t believe the sun is a star. It’s the sun. The sun is a sun. A star is a star. The sun is not a star. It doesn’t look like other stars.” (Jedipunk)
1| “In nineteen-hundred ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Everybody knows that.” (Andrea)
Congratulations to the winners! The top three will be receiving specially-made Friendly Atheist wristbands (in the color of their choice), sent to me by blog reader Shauna and her sister Danni!
…
If you’d like to win your own wristband, here is the new contest:
A friend will be starting a podcast soon. It’s essentially an atheist and Christian giving their takes on current events — a perspective from both sides.
They don’t have a name yet, though…
What would you name a Christian/Atheist podcast?
Funny, creative, and usable answers will have a shot at winning.
Good luck!

OK, I know the name is taken already, but seriously: CrossFire is just so good on so many levels…

In trying to think about a name for this podcast something stuck me. It’s not really 2 sides is it? I mean.. usually atheists believe in no gods, while christians believe in a specific god… there are tons of other religions that believe in other gods.
Really the 2 sides are reason and faith.. not atheism and christianity. This might help in coming up with a name?
I guess it depends on what KIND of christian the host is.
Maybe something like:
Faith and Reason Perspectives
or
The Faith and Reason News Hour.
The snarky bit of me wants to name it:
“The rationalist and the other guy”

It doesn’t fit, but I couldn’t resist: Apostasy Now.

Wow! I came in 5th! OK so I didn’t get a wristband, but I came in 5th. Not bad.
As for the podcast… The Godless v the Fundie or if not a Fundie then The Godless v. the Christ follower. Or better yet The Infidel v the Christ follower or the Heretic and the Christ Follower. OK I’ll quit while I’m behind.

It’s a reference to the whole Jesus/Darwin fish thing.

If they’re good friends with each other and/or a little bit feisty, call it “Conversations With An Idiot.” Then everyone in the audience gets to assign which one is which.

I quite like the podcast idea: in fact that’s precisely the sort of thing I’d like to try doing either blogwise or podcastwise. A friendly back and forth between believers and non could do a lot to spread some mutual understanding.
But no, I’m not going to give away my ideas for titles.

Need more info. Are they going to talk with each other, or just give the listener their own version of events? From your post it sounds like the latter idea, which, while interesting, seems a bit superfluous, as anyone can just check out independent atheist and christian news sources if they want to compare and contrast. If they’re going to discuss the news with each other that’s obviously different.

When you say current events are you saying it’s general news or specifically faith-related issues?

how about something like “Reasonable Dispute”? nothing to set the tone of the program specifically as pro-Christian or pro-Atheist, but highlighting the, presumably, reasonable conversation to be had between those involved. Admittedly, it lacks somewhat in the way of identifying the religious nature of the program.

Unfunded (Albeit, This may leave out the Christian if he is fundamentalist)
Faith & Evidence (Too science/unsicence specific, but a nice play on Hebrews 11:1)
Real & Grace (play on the Will & Grace TV show title)

How about:
‘Jesus Loves Me’ meets ‘This I Know (because of the evidence!)’
OK, that’s kinda lame, but the dialog possibilities are endless:
JLM: Thanks TIK, that’s very compelling and all, but I do feel sorry for your eternal soul rotting in hell.
TIK: JLM, honey, are those circular arguments under your eyes?
Cue laugh track and Rimshot!

I’ve long thought that Point Blank would make a good name for a show like this. It’s direct, implies face to face debate/discussion, and isn’t confrontational like a lot of the ones that specify that the show is about.

Atheist and A Theist (or A Theist and Atheist)
*theist (where * is the DOS/Linux/etc wildcard for searches)
Xtheist (where X is a variable. If it sounds too much like “ex-theist”, then Ytheist might be appriopriate.)
On the Average, We’re Agnostic
Superposition of States
*theist (* being the Windows/Linux/etc wildecard for searches)
the following regular expressions that match to both “atheist” and “theist” (at least in emacs)
[a`]theist
[a<]theist
