Meeting of the Atheist Minds

Posted in Friendly Atheist at 2:30 pm by Hemant Mehta

This Saturday, for the third year in a row, the leaders of nearly all the major atheist/humanist organizations in the country will be meeting in Washington D.C. to discuss ways to collaborate, share resources, and decide best methods to share our message with others.

Participating organizations include:

The only major non-religious group that I know of not sending a representative to the meeting is the Center for Inquiry. Too bad…

If you’d like to send this group of leaders a message, leave a comment. I’d be glad to share them at the meeting.

This sounds like a fantastic opportunity. It’s a shame I’m on the wrong side of the Atlantic.

What is the name of the conference? I live in DC and would love to check it out.

Center for Inquiry in effect is “sending” many representatives, as its own members belong to, or operate, a number of the other associations mentioned. If you will read the list of contributors to its own buplication “Free Inquiry”, you will see their names. Rest easy !

I’m really glad this is happening. There’s definitely a grassroots movement to make humanism/atheism more visible and more acceptable in U.S. society, and it will be great if the established groups can find ways to capitalize on it. Will there be a website that posts some of the conference, or perhaps some of its conclusions?

This is excellent news. I am particularly happy to see that American Atheists will be there. I remain puzzled by their refusal to join the Secular Coalition for America, but at least this suggests that they have some interest in collaborating.

Yes, some writers for their magazines may be there, but other groups are sending the leaders who *run* the various organizations. CFI is not doing this. (Though I am now hearing they are sending a guy who works with them in the DC area. He’s just not running the CFI show.)

No website, as it’s not a conference. But I’ll talk about the conclusions and ideas when I get back :)

I fulfill the minority quota at the meeting :) But if I find any others, you’ll be the first to know.

    Sir/Madam,
I like what is happening here. Sadly, I am unable to attend. Hopefully, this meeting, too, will be available as was “Beyond Belief” of last fall. Such availability opens up the ideas and discussion to millions of others.
    Good luck and good wishes.
