This was an incredibly inspirational story. I am SO glad that American Atheists could help this man and his family out. I'm on a free 6-month trial membership with AA right now, but the moment I can get some funds freed up I am going to send in one heck of a financial contribution. Who knows? Maybe they'll be helping defend ME one of these days...

Siamang's right - the ONLY news report I found of this outside of the American Atheists website was The Guymon Daily Herald reporting in 11/2005 after the sheriff was called to Hardesty High School (when Nicole S. was expelled). Please note the picture in the upper right corner of the story, really quite ironic considering how this all played out.

Why was there NO news coverage of this??

The press release from 6/26/2006 on American Atheists' website reported that Edwin Kagin, the AA lawyer who represented the father, 'told the jury [in closing] that it really should not be necessary for an Atheist to tell them it is wrong to lie under oath, as he reminded them the Christian school officials and the police had done in their sworn trial testimony. "Thou shall not bare [sic] false witness against thy neighbor. Ninth Commandment...'"

If the story itself wasn't newsworthy enough - injustice in America, finally thwarted - at least you'd think that part would have set off somebody's irony meter, especially given all the urgency that seems to be out there to get the Ten Commandments posted to help guide those with failing morals in America.

This reminds me of the similar story where a Jewish family in Delaware was being driven from their home after protesting officially-led Christian prayer in public school.

And I wonder, why isn't the media covering these incidents? With all the talk of a culture war, and the danger of secularists, what about THIS? What about this theological tyranny?

If the tables were turned, and a child was expelled FOR praying, and driven out of town FOR being a Christian, there'd be an uproar in this nation, and FOX News would run 24/7 about the War on Christians.

But Bill O'Reilly needs to wake up. This is far more serious than calling the easter bunny the "Spring bunny." This is people being threatened. It's folks being run out of town because they have the TIMERITY to be non-Christians.

It's the Christian War on Non-Christians, in Fox News Speak.

Disgusting. I do hope this is as dark as it gets before the dawn.

How far we have not come, and how we have perverted the message of Jesus. This makes me ill. It also reminds me of To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee.

I am so proud of American Atheist Chuck Smalkowsk and his family. The ordeal they endured dragged the ugliness into the open; and lanced the abcess of hatred at the core of that town's value system. Sadly, I don't believe this is an isolated case - just a case where one man and his family had the courage to stand up and speak out for the America he believes in, the America we should ALL strive to protect. The moral debt we owe them cannot be repaid, but it appears they may have practical needs. Is there a fund set up for them?
